Grapeseed oil is extracted from the seeds of grapes (scientific name Vitis Vinifera). Since 90% of grape cultivation is for the purpose of winemaking, the seeds are obtained from the byproduct of winemaking. The oil can be extracted using two methods :
- Cold-pressing : is a mechanical method of extraction. The seeds are crushed and squeezed to extract the oil at low temperatures without chemicals or solvents. The yields are lower but this method preserves more of the natural anti-oxidants and compounds of the oil.
- Solvent extraction : solvents are used to extract the oil from the seeds. It is cheaper and gives a larger yield. However, solvent residue may remain in the oil which may affect is flavour or quality.

Grapeseed oil can be used in cooking when sauteing or stir-frying. It can be used in salads and baked goods. It is quite neutral in taste.
Grapeseed oil is high in polyunsaturated fats which can help lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein) also known as “bad cholesterol”. It is high in Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids. It also contains small amounts of tocopherols aka Vitamin E.
Grapeseed oil is used in skincare for the following aspects :
- Anti-oxidants : Help to neutralize and protect against free-radicals created from environmental stressors and sun exposure. Free-radicals can damage your skin and make you look older. It can help to lower even skin tone and prevent hyperpigmentation and dark spots. The anti-oxidative elements of grapeseed oil come from its Vitamins A, C and E and the polyphenols (plant compounds)
- Anti-inflammatory : The Vitamin E, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids help to moisturise skin and prevent moisture loss which leads to an overall stronger skin barrier. Healthier and moisturised skin is less susceptible to irritation, inflammation and redness.
- Anti-microbial : The polyphenols (plant compounds) found in grapeseed oil such as resveratrol and proanthocyanidins are able to induce oxidative damage to bacterial membrane thus destroying the bacteria. In layman’s terms, it can kill bacteria and germs. Grapeseed oil can help in treatment and reduction of acne.
- Non-comedogenic : Grapeseed oil will not clog pores so it is suitable to deliver all its benefits without causing you an acne breakout.
