Japanese Knotweed

Japanese knotweed also known as Asian knotweed has the scientific name Reynoutria japonica.

Historically, Japanese knotweed has been used in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) for more than 2000 years to clear the effects of jaundice, reduce heatiness, promote blood circulation, expelling wind and dampness, decongest phlegm and suppressing cough.

Japanese knotweed root extract is very high in the the polyphenol resveratrol. Resveratrol is commonly also found in the skin of grapes, blueberries, raspberries, mulberries and peanuts. Research is ongoing on its ability to lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation and control diabetes. In skincare, resveratrol provides antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects.

Recent research shows that Japanese knotweed promotes wound healing, protects skin fibroblasts, reduces inflammation and stimulates collagen organisation. It can help in skin whitening by suppressing the enzyme tyrosinase which is responsible for converting tyrosine to melanin (skin colour pigments).

We include Japanese knotweed into ioula for its anti-inflammatory and soothing effects on the skin.
