Aloe Vera

Top view of aloe vera plant.

Aloe vera (scientific name Aloe Barbadensis) is a succulent plant that originates from the Arabian Peninsula. However, it also grows well in tropical, semi-tropical and arid climates around the world. It has been cultivated commercially for centuries mainly to produce topical treatments.

Aloe vera leaves contain high amounts of the polysaccharide gel acemannan which is the primary active ingredient in aloe vera gel. The gel is used skin lotions, creams, cosmetics, ointments and gels for promoting moisturisation and hydration and for the treatment of minor burns, skin abrasions, insect bites and windburn (sunburn but in cooling weather).

Aloe vera is slightly toxic when ingested or eaten due to the presence of the compound aloin which is present in the semi-liquid latex of the plant. It has a slight laxative effect and if too much is ingested, it may cause abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. Constant consumption may lead to other more serious side effects so it is best to just have aloe vera as a rare treat.

Aloe vera extract is used in skincare for the following benefits :

  • Hydration and moisturisation : Aloe vera is high in water content and helps to moisturise the skin. It also acts an emollient to help soothe the skin and make it feel soft.
  • Anti-inflammation : Aloe vera gel can calm and soothe irritated, inflamed, sensitive skin and reduce redness and puffiness. It is effective in soothing sunburns and help reduce itching and inflammation due to eczema and psoriasis.
  • Anti-oxidative : Aloe vera contains vitamin A which helps regulate genes in the body’s natural antioxidant defense process and also help reduce lipid peroxidation which is the breakdown of the lipids in cell membranes caused by free radicals. It also contains Vitamins C and E which are themselves anti-oxidants. The combination of these three vitamins help neutralize free radicals and their effects which include the development of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Acne treatment and wound healing : Aloe vera has antimicrobial properties which help reduce bacterial growth and help wounds heal faster and this makes it suitable to be used for the treatment of minor cuts, scratches and burns. The management of bacterial growth also prevents the development of acne. Aloe vera itself is able to unclog pores and clear the skin thus preventing your pores and sebum glands from getting obstructed which is the primary reason for skin infection and subsequently pimple and acne growth.
